MONTANA SAPPHIRE
GeoGem mines a portion of the famous "Rock Creek" deposit of Sapphires
located near Philipsburg, Montana. This complex deposit has yielded large quantities of
gem quality Sapphires for over 100 years. These "Sapphire Mountains" yield a very mixed
variety of fancy colored Sapphires including yellow, orange, padparadscha, pink, violet,
green, cornflower blue, and an occasional ruby (red Sapphire). Generally, these fine
Sapphires are relatively small cutting gemstones of one third carat to one carat in size.
However, large stones or "Doorknobs" as the local miners refer to them are sometimes
found - upwards of 30 carats! These great american stones are available in a variety
of shapes and sizes from GeoGem. These superb gems are "Made by Nature" right here in
the U.S.A.!!!
OREGON SUNSTONE
GeoGem also mines a variety of Gem Feldspar or Labradorite that is rapidly becoming popular.
The Oregon Sunstone has been highly recognized over the last ten years due to the stones
immense variety of color variations caused by varying degrees of copper mineralization. These
stones range from a deep pidgeon blood red to kelly green. Some of the stones show Bi and
Tri coloration. Other stones display a rare light phenomena known as Di or Trichroism.
Further, a good many of these stones show an intense chatoyancy or "Schiller" effect caused by
millions of microscopic copper platelets. World-Class gem carvers have found the sunstone
to be captivating. Faceters find orienting the "Schiller" a stimulating challenge and designers
are finding that this Oregon state gemstone is in every case a true "One-Of-A-Kind" gem.
These stones occur as phenochrysts in volcanic flows in central and southern Oregon. The
unique occurence of microscopic copper is only found in Oregon. The World's Largest colored
Sunstone was found by GeoGem in 2002 and is currently at the Smithsonian Institute. This stone
weighs an impressive 812 carats! Once again, these wonderful designer stones are available
in a vast assortment from GeoGem. Great "Art By Nature" from the GeoGem gallery of natural
American gemstones!!!
